How Much Weight Should A Newborn Japanese Chin Gain Per Day?

Posted by on January 10, 2012 in All About Chins, Puppy Blog | 4 comments

When we have a litter, we weigh our puppies each day, and expect to see between 1/2 and 1 ounce of weight gain per day.

They are about the size of a gerbil when they are born, and they will quickly put on weight.

We look for them to be moving around immediately, with their eyes closed of course.

Within a week, they can usually find your hand from a small distance away by smell, and they will usually come over to explore.

By two weeks, we start to see the eyes open.

  1. This will be very fun to watch. Are you guys still planning on setting up a puppy cam for this litter?

  2. Hello, Joe, and Tracy.
I have been checking your site since I stumbled upon it recently while browsing different Chin breeder sites. I watched your video of the birth of Tootsie and her litter mates. They were adorable.
I lost my first Chin, Patches, several months ago at the age of 13 years, and seven months. He was the light of my life, and after declaring there could never be another, I soon realized I need another baby to love. Patches was black and white, but this time I would prefer a lemon colored female, if possible. I realize you won’t know what will be available until after Tootsie whelps, but I wanted to contact you to indicate my interest. Sunny and Tootsie are both beautiful Chins, as are all of your dogs.
Thank you, and congratulations to Tootsie on becoming a mommy for the first time.

    • Hello Norma,

Thanks for visiting our site and taking the time to comment. It is difficult to loose a pet, especially when they fill us up as much as Patches did for you.

Your right about it being difficult to guess what the litter will bring, but we have always had lemons mixed with the black and white ones when we combined the two as a breeding pair, so the chances are good for the streak to continue. What is harder to predict is whether the lemon will come as a female, male or both!

Stay tuned, and we’ll see what happens….lol

Tootsie is showing all of the signs of pregnancy, even though it is really too early to test. She has an incredible appetite, is possessive of her treats and she has the increased urge to urinate. These are all symptoms we have seen in the past and we feel confident she is pregnant.

We plan to do a really good job documenting this litter in both pictures and video.

      Thanks again,
      Joe

      • Thank you for your kind comments. I surely will stay tuned!
